A good early war-date Pennsylvania citizen's, 4pp. 8vo., letter, Morrisville, Bucks Co., Penn., April 28, 1861 to "Dear George", in part: "Our N. Y. papers…mentioned that communication by mail & telegraph would be established again…with Washington. Our latest news of you is through Wm…at Gettysburg…I wish you & all the family could be out of Washington…though, I suppose there is no longer any danger of its being attacked. Phila. was quiet though people there, as all the north & west are on earnest preparation to support the government. The Times says there has been no such popular uprising since the day of Peter the Hermit…the slaves states, though displeased with the Free, are not united…there is in the first place the heptarchy of the Confederate states, then the secession, without union, of N. Carolina & Va., then the mob rule of Baltimore, then the armed neutrality of Kentucky & Tennessee & lastly the threatened secession of western from eastern Va…and no money or other means…to carry on the war. Some people think there will be no fighting. Already we hear of an armistice proposed by Va. But they wont do [?] north…John Cadwalader told me I looked like Jefferson Davis, except that he had but on eye…I told him not to say so to any body else to it might not be safe for me. People had heard of Davis' being at Richmond, but were not prepared for his appearance in Phila!…George Cadwalader's house, in Maryland, was not burned, as reported…Geo. A. McCall's, uncle's son, who was in the army…has volunteered on behalf of Pa…I remain…yours T. Well[?]…". VG
