His fine full photo portrait over caption that it was he “…who delivered the message that rescued the Lost Battalion.” 140 page book (5 x 7) “History and Rhymes of the Lost Battalion” by Pvt. McCollum. 1929; Pub for Veterans Organization. Presentation copy. Fancy printed thick brown paper covers. Exc. +. Some photo portraits of officers (including Col. Whittlesey) and Pvt. Krotoshinsky the Jewish G.I. awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for that heroic deed. Among the most memorable and written about skirmishes of WWI (a television drama about it in 2001). Book includes two full pages devoted to his deed plus portrait. ACCOMPANIED BY 3 special printed postcards “Compliments of the Jewish Welfare Board” (on face side) intended for overseas returning Jewish soldiers to send to their families upon their return. Two are identical with an illustration of a smiling American G.I. in combat gear with bold print “HELLO—JUST GOT BACK. AM FEELING GREAT. WILL WRITE AGAIN SOON” with large Jewish star and “J.W.B.” emblazoned on it. Each differs slightly. One with J.W.B. compliments from “Camp Mills L. I., NY” the other J.W.B. caption “U.S. Army and Navy” below the illustration. Both sent by G.I.’s on their return to U.S.. Also postcard from J.W.B. with illustration of an American troopship, the “S. S. Calamares”; caption: “Greetings from the J.W.B. to soldiers and sailors of the U.S. Army and Navy.” Light aging and wear, but exc. with tiny corner chipped on one only. All 4 items.
