Document Signed “J.C. Fremont” on verso of this 1868 $1000 debt certificate payable as imprinted to John C. Fremont. Fremont, a Union General during the Civil War, earned the nickname "The Pathfinder" for his earlier exploration in the Southwestern United States. The financing of this venture was to be accomplished by the sale of bonds based on a grant to Fremont by Texas of eight million acres of land. However, the French agents employed for the purpose of selling the bonds falsely claimed that they were guaranteed by the United States government in their marketing efforts. Fremont, though not directly involved in the deception, was prosecuted in absentia by France. Uncancelled.
