ABEL PARKER UPSHUR (1790-1844) Secretary of the Navy and then Secretary of State during the Whig administration of President John Tyler. He was killed when a gun exploded during an official function on board the steam warship USS Princeton. Two autographs. One clipped signature: "I am respectfully your obt sevt, A. P. Upshur." 4¼x2¼", toning; clipped postal cover with Free Frank, including FREE red stamp, Washington postmark and the full address entirely in Upshur's hand. 4½x2¼". Fine. On February 28, 1844, while joining President Tyler and many other dignitaries for a Potomac River cruise on the new steamship USS Princeton, Secretary Upshur and several others were killed when one of the ship's guns exploded..
