A good early Carrolton, Missouri settler's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Thomas S. Holloway, "Hazel Wood, [Missouri], May 8, 1846," to his friend, Alanson, reading, in part: "àwe got aground in Elk Shoals [Elk River, Kanawha Co., West Virginia]àwe had the disagreeable pleasure of staying there until nearly daylightàthe old boat sprung a leakàthey had to take all the old bed clothes to stop the holeàto keep her from sinkingàI went upon the hurricane deck to take a lingering look at old Charleston. I would give any thingàif I was only back there. I don't feel right out in these wild woodsàI should stay here this summer and in the fall go to New Orleansàon Sunday is to be a big day in CarroltonàI am going up to cut a swell amongst some of the girlsàthe people here are talking of having a rail road from here to OregonàThomas S. Holloway." The original transmittal leaf, addressed: "Alanson Arnold, Esq., Charleston, Kananwha County, Virginia" with a "Carrolton, Missouri, May 12" postmark and manuscript "10" post rate, is included.
