Presented in modern archival frame, William Notman: Boston, MA, n.d., ca 1883. Photographic montage, approx 4" x 5", (sight), framed to 11.75 x 13.75 in., composed for use by the Travelers Life and Accident Insurance Company. Image shows President Abraham Lincoln with Admiral David G. Farragut and Generals William T. Sherman, George Henry Thomas, George Gordon Meade, Ulysses S. Grant, Joseph Hooker, Philip Henry Sheridan, and Winfield Scott Hancock posed together in an interior space, with text reading in part, "Union Commanders . . . With Compliments of the Travellers [sic] Insurance Company" printed below. Notman created this composite image in his studio, using figures cut from print sources and pasted together on a painted background. Travelers Insurance, a firm based in Hartford, Connecticut, commissioned this image, as well as a Confederate version, for their agents to display or distribute to customers.
