Rare Autograph Letter Signed "Sister Lou" from the Lou Lumpkins and Philpena McDowell correspondence, 4pp. octavo, Atlanta, Georgia, April 20, 1863, addressed to Idle Wild, and reads in part: "...'Can you tell me Lous how it is you have won my love so quick? Have you done it by magic? Or what other power have you used?' Yes, I can tell you Rena. Lou has won your love not by magic or power but she has won your love because God made us to love each other. We are one heart & soul. I love you as much as my simple heart could love mortal. you are my friend, sister, my comfort! You are my darling Rena. Had I been a man you should have been my wife! Come close my pet, let me look into our black eyes & kiss your rosy lips & tell you how I love you. Yes, I can express it all in one simple word, you are my darling! My own darling! There! I never called but one beside you my darling! & he proved untrue. If you my dark bewitching beauty were to use me like he has I fear it would madden me & in my wild wrath I fear as much as I now love you, I would curse you. For then! Oh then! My heart strings would be infraid. You must not cast lightly aside the heart you have won for if you do, oh Rena it would be better for you if you had never been born. You could not return me back my heart again like you found it for you would have to tear it out by the roots to untwine it from your own & that would be cruel! I am glad that my letter made you nervous for that tells me I am loved & have some power over the cold passionless Miss Rena....You must know that I love you when I tell you I am writing to you before I do my mother...Oh! Tell me you love me again. Call me darling! Your pet! Love me or I die..." Fine condition.
