A group on NINE letters written by Benjamin Rohrer who enlisted on 6/26/1861 as a Surgeon, was commissioned into Field & Staff PA 39th Infantry and was Mustered Out on 6/11/1864 . The group includes: Undated, Camp Hospital, 10th Regiment to his daughter, in small part, "I am glad you have found nice little friends for playmates. You must be kind to them & never quarrel , you are getting older now and must behave like a lady. ...", ...plus, Datelined Washington August 1, 1861, to his wife. In small part, "We apprehend no danger wherever from an attack from the Rebels, they are not so foolish as to commit such a suicide act. Washington is impregnable at this time with near one hundred thousand men ... Bastruff's line on a hill ... have an elegant view of the city and along the Potomac down to Alexandria. ..." ... plus, A letter written to Dr. Rohrer by John S. McCalmont who was a politician and enlisted on 6/29/1861 as a Colonel, was commissioned into Field & Staff PA 39th Infantry and resigned on 5/9/1862 . Datelined Franklin PA, July 25, 1862. In part, "The hardships the regiment has endured and the hard fighting it has done since I left ... deserve to be placed forever on the role of fame. ... Were Richmond taken, it would not be so hard on them. I suppose that event will not take place for a month or so. It seems likely that the Rebels will evacuate it. ... I see that of the officers you only lost poor Gaither Adams ...." ... Dateline Camp near Harrison's Landing July 25, 1862, in part, "They commenced on Tuesday. General Sumner on Wednesday, Gen. Heintzelman yesterday, Gen. Franklin today ... Each corps has from 35-40 regiments. I... It will be a period in our history...as there has never been anything like it on record. ... but now as we are in a sickly climate - those Patriotism was only skin deep ..Poor miserable specimens of humanity - they mope about camp, whining and telling of their suffering ... We have lost Major Smith, Chaplin, Quarter Master, Elder, Capt. Partridge, Lt. Stewart, Lt. Douglas & Lt. Coleman all within ten days ..." ... plus, A quick letter, Aug 1, 1862, in part, "I was wishing you would come along with Grandma to Columbia so I could see you. Your friends Lilly Fry, Anne Miller and others often ask about you and wonder when you are coming ...." ... plus, Datelined Near Lexington, Kentucky, August 15, 1862, written by Captain McDaniel to Ida Rorher and forwarded to Benjamin Rorher, personal family comments. ..., plus, Dateline Battelfield near Sharpsburg, Sept. 23, 1862, quick letter, in part, "Major Mahon has been with me all night. Knowles $ Will Nike were here, they belong to the militia and came down from Hagerstown ..." ... plus, Dateline Hd. Qtrs PA Militia, Harrisburg Oct. 17/62 written by Jas. King, Surg Gen'l to Rorher. In part, "In regard to the request made before I left the Division, I have not forgotten you. But I have no authority at present in the matter.
