A very rare war-date albumen photograph, 8-1/2"x5-1/2", depicting the members of a slave family owned by the Gaines family who lived just outside of Richmond, Virginia near the Cold Harbor battlefields of 1864. Incredibly, their family land became the scene of the battle of Gaines Mills on June 27, 1862 during the Seven Day's campaign in 1862. The slave family consists of two middle-aged men, three women, and five youngsters including two infants who appear for the camera of Vermont photographer G. H. Houghton taken sometime during April 1862. Signed in the lower right mount margin by Houghton's assistant "Larkin G. Mead" in bold ink, with mount measuring 13-1/2"x11", VG. An ultra rare photograph of an identified slave family with the only other example known is found in the collection of a state institution.
