BENJAMIN, Judah (1811-1834). U.S. lawyer and statesman. Senator from Louisiana from 1853 until Louisiana seceded from the Union in 1861. He became the attorney general under Confederate president Jefferson Davis. During the War Benjamin served as secretary of war and secretary of state. After the Confederacy fell, he fled to England, where he was eventually named to the Queen's council. He retired in 1883 as one of the most venerated members of the British bar. Autograph Letter Signed, "J. P. Benjamin", as Confederate Secretary of War, 1p. quarto, to President Jefferson Davis, with Davis' endorsement, "File. J.D.", Richmond, December 30, 1864, sending his official reports on the attacks on Forts Walker and Beauregard to Jefferson Davis, to be communicated to the Confederate Congress, "I have the honor to submit herewith copies of the official reports of the Bombardment of Forts Walker and Beauregard at the entrance of Port Royal Sound; and of the battle of Drainsville of the 20th inst. for communication to the Congress." VG.
