A very rare war-date Army of Northern Virginia manuscript document, 1p. quarto, "Head Quarters, Army of Northern Virginia, April 10, 1865", being Gen. "Billy" Mahone's official copy of the very last document ever issued from the headquarters of the Army of Northern Virginia, reading, in part: "...The following order is published for the information of all parties concerned...Special Orders No. __ All officers and men of the Confederate service paroled at Appomattox C. Ho. Va., who to reach their homes are compelled to pass through the lines of the Union Armies will be allowed to do so and to pass free on all Government Transports and Military Rail Road. By Command of Lieut. Gen. Grant. Sgd E.S. Parker Lt Col & AAG. By Command of Gen. R. E. Lee Sgd. C.S. Venerable AAG....". Endorsed as an official headquarters document in lower left hand margin, reading, in part: "Official...Maj Genl. Wm Mahone Cav. Div.", and signed by Gen. James Longstreet's AAG, Lt Col. OSMUN LATROBE. Extra Fine. William Mahone (1826-1895) Confederate general who assisted in the capture of the Norfolk Navy Yard, he served continuously with the Army of Northern Virginia from Seven Pines to Appomattox Court House being promoted to major general for his part in the battle of the Crater, July 30, 1864.
