Holographic manuscript by Captain Dudley Digges Pendleton (1840-1886) who was the Assistant Adjutant General of his Uncle General William Pendleton, 1p. folio, being his officially issued copy, which reads in full: "General Orders No. 9. After four years of arduous services marked by unsurpassed courage & fortitude the Army of N. Va. has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers and resources of so many hard fought battles who have remained stead fast to the last that I have concerted to the result from no distrust of them. But feeling that valor & devotions could accomplish nothing that would compensate for the loss that would have attended the continuance of the contest I determine to avoid the useless sacrifice of those whose past services have endeavored them to their countryman. By the terms of the agreement officers & men can return to their homes and remain until exchanged, you will take with you the satisfaction that proceeds from the consciousness of duty faithfully performed, and I earnestly pray that a merciful God will extend to you his blessing and protection. With an unceasing admiration of your constancy and devotion to your Country & a grateful remembrance of your kind & generous consideration of myself, I bid you all an affectionate farewell.....(Signed) R.E.
