Broadside, "Crutch Extra!!! Important From Washington. Death of President Lincoln. The Assassin Escapes," [Washington: n.p., 1865], 1 p. 5 ¾" x 13 3/8". Probably printed by a local Washington printer, this broadside is one of the printed descriptions of the assassination of President Lincoln at Ford's Theater, including an eyewitness account. The broadside emphasizes the initial $10,000 reward offered by General Christopher Augur (which was afterwards dramatically increased) and the attack on Secretary of State William Henry Seward including an erroneous report of the death Seward's son. The piece continues reporting that John Wilkes Booth remains at large, and that "A letter found in Mr. Booth's trunk identifies him as the President's murder." This is likely the letter written by Sam Arnold to Booth telling him he wanted nothing more to do with the conspiracy to kidnap Lincoln. A unique historic document, the only one known! Archivaly rice-paper backed to museum standards.
