WILDE, Oscar (1854-1900) an Anglo-Irish playwright, novelist, poet, and short story writer. One of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day, known for his barbed and clever wit, he suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned after being convicted in a famous trial of "gross indecency" for homosexual acts. Autograph Letter Signed, "Oscar Wilde" 4p. octavo, and reads in part: "...I was delighted to see your handwriting again; it was like a touch of old days. Certainly; I should be very pleased to have an article on Decorative art in Ireland, with illustrations...The articles should take in all that is being done in Ireland, outside of Dr. Hart's Schools. I have an article on them. The best way to secure accurate reproduction & design is by having photographs taken. Will you ask Miss Maguire if she can get this done and at what cost - Embroidery on lace, for instance, must be photographed, not drawn. The expense of this would of course be borne by Canell & Co. as for the article 2500 words will be sufficient. I should think that, if the designs are good, the article should be attractive..."
