Photographic Baseball Card, 4"x5-7/8" of uniformed baseball player with bat in hand standing beside home plate. This card was done for the "GYPSY QUEEN" Cigarette company as marked in the negative, and is wet-stamped "PROOF" on verso, c. 1888. Great clarity. Late 20th century pencil ID on verso "Mathews Athletics." Robert T. Mathews was born on November 21, 1851 in Baltimore, MD. In 1871, Mathews signed with Ft. Wayne of the newly formed National Association and became their opening day starter. On May 4 while playing for Ft. Wayne, he pitched a five hit shutout, defeating Cleveland 2-0, and became the first player in professional baseball history to record a win. Goodwin & Company was the smallest of the five major cigarette manufacturers that merged to form The American Tobacco Company. Old Judge, Gypsy Queen, and Dogs Head were the most popular brands that Goodwin made.
