A good 1p 4to D.S., Middleborough, May 9, 1781 , in which Nathan White signs an oath committing himself ;"into the service of the United States of America, to continue in that service for a term of three years. " This oath is unusual in that the signer swears loyalty to:" The service of the United States", as a whole, and not to any state in particular. He also swears :"to be under the general command of the General Officers of the United States of America….to observe and obey all such orders…in every respect, as are or may be provided for the Army of the United States…". Minor soiling, otherwise the document is in very good condition.
