OSGOOD, Samuel (1747 - 1813) Revolutionary War Soldier, Member of the Continental Congress and the nation's First Postmaster General. Signature and lengthy A.N.S. on a 4pp. folio list of merchandise being entered into the United States onboard the Schooner Lion Clark in 1803. The shipment was an extremely varied one, and after 4pages of entries detailing the ships merchandise Osgood has written: " N Office June 11, 1803: This return and manifest is so complicated that they cannot be certified in any other way than by stating the difference in the number of packages: “225 package on manifest/ 208 do. On return/ 17 the difference/ S. Osgood N. off.” In our day when we like to refer to :"Simpler Times", it is worth noting that it took well over a month just for the contents of this rather small ship to be inventoried! Mercifully, this complex document comes with a full transcription. Some soiling and a few minor creases, otherwise very good.
