DEARBORN, HENRY ( 1751 - 1829) Noted Revolutionary War General and President Jefferson's Secretary of War, he later served in diplomatic positions as well. Interesting political content. ALS 4pp. 4to., Lisbon, Portugal, May 22, 1824. While serving as Ambassador to Portugal, Dearborn reports on the extremely unstable situation there, in part:"…This unhappy country is still in an uneasy state. The King's want of firmness prevents the adoption of such measures as would produce general tranquility. The Queen is now under arrest at the Palace of Quellon. The principle Clergy and many of the nobility are of her faction, and combined, they are a formidable party , and the Army cannot be relied on. I think it will ultimately become necessary to procure a body of British Troops to secure Tranquility, a TERRIBLE ALTERNATIVE . Nothing will provide general satisfaction short of some kind of a Cortes Very Good, with complete transcription.
