RAWLE, William (1759-1836). Distinguished Lawyer, Loyalist during the Revolution, Anti-Slavery advocate, US Attorney for Pennsylvania 1790-1799. He prosecuted the ring-leaders of the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. An ardent abolitionist, Rawle became a member of the Maryland Society promoting abolition in 1792 and then its president in 1818; he also argued against the constitutionality of slavery before the state supreme court in 1805. Autograph Letter Signed, “W. Rawle” 1p. quarto, April 7, [no year], addressed to Eli Price, it reads in part: “...I am sorry to trouble you so much about amendments, but as the Court would readily grant them, when it meets, I hope you will not object to my inserting after the words ‘Mary Brownjohn the executive of William Brownjohn,’ the words ‘citizens of the State of New York’...” VG.
