ALLEN, Samuel (1772-1842) Member of Massachusetts state house of representatives, 1806-10; member of Massachusetts state senate, 1812-15, 1831; U.S. Representative from Massachusetts, 1817-29 (6th District 1817-25, 7th District 1825-29). Autograph Letter Signed, “Saml. C. Allen” 3p. quarto, Washington, December 19, 1828, addressed to Samuel Lathrop, a former Rep from Mass., and is franked by Allen, it reads in part: “...I wish your votes would have been more availing but New England men certainly have nothgin to espout of horrors under this government. They are a [?] of political Jews, they are persecuted & grow rich. I doubt too very much whether the South will every support, certainly not till their pride is humbled, any man for Prest. who belongs to a non-slave state. From appearances however I do not think they will be able to change very materially the course of measures. They have come with their mixed colored coats of Negro manufacture...for effect...There cannot be anything more contemptilbe than the endeavor of the Adams Republicans to attempt a reorganization of what they call the Republican party in Mass. It has the meanness of the most politic faction & will prove as important as it is unprincipled. The more enlightened & honorable men will not accede to it...I cannot say how things may go at Pressent in Mass. Jackson will [?] have gone by - a new state of things will present itself the conflict will then be not between Jackson and his opposers but between Van Buren & Calhoun & Clay or the PMG perhaps...” More.
