March 31, 1830, THE NEW YORK JOURNAL OF COMMERCE, Choice Very Fine. Vol. III, No. 353, 23.25" x 17", 4 pages, 6-column layout. A clean paper, with minor foxing and toning. Separation along the spine. Large paper has a wealth of news accounts from across the country, including an article on page 2 about piracy near Charleston, South Carolina, but the best "news brief"--also on page 2--comes from New Orleans, Louisiana, with mention of "four persons of color (freemen)" who "were arrested March 8th on charge of circulating 'Wa[l]ker's Appeal,' alias 'the diabolical Boston Pamphlet.' " "Walker's Appeal" was written in the late 1820s by African American abolitionist, David Walker of Boston, Massachusetts, who urged immediate, violent rebellion by slaves in the South. Terrific historic note of the "incendiary" pamphlet which threw the South into a tizzy!
