1830 Print: "UNITED STATES SLAVE TRADE," Choice Very Fine. Uncolored print, measuring 5" x 8" including 1" margins, on card stock. No publisher or engraver listed. Detailed engraving depicts Africans in chains, standing near an overseer with whip in one hand, while another man--probably a slave owner--on horseback with a whip under one arm and wearing a top hat and fancy jacket. In the background are a slave ship and the Capitol Building with a U.S. flag atop its dome. In 1830, there was a strong movement to abolish slavery in Washington, D.C., and John Quincy Adams introduced a bill the following year to rally slavery's opponents. Lightly toned, a few minor stains. Rare print, in exceptional condition.
