Manuscript Document, being the complaint of one Henry Hubbell for restitution for the fraudulent sale of a slave and her two children, 13 pages, 7.5" by 12.5," Galveston County, Texas, November 22, 1849. Three-hole punched at top, in Choice Extremely Fine condition. Here Hubbell gives a blow-by-blow account of how he came to be swindled out of $3000... Owen Johnson wanted to buy, from Thomas Chubb, half-interest in Chubb's steamboats, the "Liverpool" and the "Two Brothers." Chubb owed Hubbell $3,000, and Johnson arranged to pay Chubb's debt to him, as payment for (half) the vessels. To this end, Johnson gave Hubbell the deed to Milly and her children, but Hubbell soon discovered that the slaves belonged exclusively to Johnson's wife's from a previous marriage, the estate of which had not yet been settled. Adding insult to injury, while owing money to Hubbell, Johnson bought the steamboats valued at $7000 outright!
