Autograph Letter, 3p. folio, addressed to Mr. C.W. Hollowell, not dated, reads in part: “...I put my life in jeopardy to see Capt Rowan to know if he could go home and stay there without being molested after he had foolishly ran away twice...As to what I said about slavery you may think I am a second John Cook...far be it from me to act as he has on any other man who gives encouragment to an insurrection...what I meant by saying ‘ Let the oppressed go free’...I have thought a great deal about slavery. I have twisted my brain almost in knots trying to find out what the Almighty is about to do with the poor creatures...there is something wrong about the system of slavery and until it is righted we can have no peace...I have never wanted to be an overseer...” Fine.
