Manuscript Document, being a suit against an estate for the illegal sale of Sarah Ann, and Tanner and her two children"; 7 3/4" by 12 1/4", County of Polk, Texas, April 6, 1851. The 1st page bears remnant of a red wax seal, causing a 2" by 1" hole at top margin. The bottom of the page is stained where the seal, when the document was folded, lay against it - and the 2nd sheet, at top and bottom, bears faint seal stains as well. There are, additionally, three file slits at top throughout, and the upper left corners are significantly chipped. Still, the overall condition of this lengthy document is Very Fine....This suit concerns the estate of one James Hill, valued at $6200 but carrying a debt of about $1,000. The inheritors argue that the estate's administrators mismanaged the estate's assets and contracted new debts; had they not, there would have been to no need to sell "a Negro girl named Sarah Ann, also Tanner and her two children" - worth, in 1850, in excess of the estate's initial debt of $1000.
