April 17, 1856, Manuscript Document, being a suit brought against one T.H. Lacy by P.H. Ashe; 4 page, 8" x 12 1/2," Brazoria County, Texas, April 17, 1856. Three file holes at top, not affecting text; a tiny bit of faint staining at bottom; remarkably clean overall, and in Very Fine condition. Ashe contends that Lacy owes him, for slave hire alone, $10,000! An enormous sum, considering that a slave could be hired for a year's labor for about $125 - so that Lacy must have "rented" some 80 slaves! And, considering that the truly giant Texas plantations were comprised of 300 slaves - $10,000 for slave hires seems rich indeed.
