Partly-printed Slave Bill of Sale, 1p. folio, November 15, 1856, Gibson, Tennessee, being an agreement between N.I. Hess & L.B. Gilchrist of Tennessee with Matt Runick of Kentucky for the sum of $5200 received in judgement. Against this judgement Hess & Gilchrist have the following property levied “One negro man Jacob of the value of $1000, one negro woman & child (Silla) of the value of $1000, one boy named Ned of the value of $600.” Hess notes at bottom “I have the necessity of advertising the above property Novr. 3rd 1856.” Most likely for public auction. Fine. Interesting interstate slave deal. Nelson Irvin Hess (1795-1869) was a Cumberland, Tennessee Presbyterian Minister and an early West Tennessee explorer and settler.
