A 4-1/2 page deposition dated November 4, 1858, written by the court clerk, 12.75" x 6.5", Extremely Fine. Sheriff A.D. Harris, sheriff of Gonzales County testifies in a case in which eleven slaves had been sold after the sheriff placed a lien against the seller's property for $17,000, making his obligation for debt substantially more than the slaves were sold for. In part, "...A.D. Harris...testified that at the time of the Levy was made on the negroes in controversy Mr. Means was indebted over $17000: that he was then considered insolvent--Harris stated further that there were eleven negroes in Jail under execution at the time of Wheeler's purchase and that he thought the whole of the negroes to be worth $9,500...." Pages are neatly written on ruled paper and bound with a brass brad at upper left.
