Lot of five sepia-toned photographs of lithographs by J. Noel Paton, approximate sizes 8.5" x 7", mounted to an overall size of 18.25" x 13.25". The photographs are mounted on captioned leaves and loose in paper wrappers as issued. Each print is accompanied by a descriptive caption, titled respectively: "Verbum Dei," "The Sale," "The Capture," "The Rescue," and "Freedom"--along with quotations from the Bible. Collections of these five photos were presented to the subscribers of the Art-Union of Glasgow for the year 1863: "The Object of the Art-Union of Glasgow is, to aid in extending a knowledge of the Fine Arts, by distributing among its Members meritorious Works of Art. A Subscription of One Guinea constitutes Membership for One Year..." Wrappers are rubbed with edge wear and the spine has been reinforced with cloth. The mounts are well-foxed, some yellowing of the images, but this is a rare and historically significant collection, the first of its kind that we have offered. Joseph Noel Paton (1821-1901) was born in Dunfermline, Scotland to a family of weavers. He studied at the Royal Academy, London and became a painter of historical, fairy, allegorical and religious subjects, in a style close to that of the Pre-Raphaelites.
