Part-printed clothing receipt document, May 20, 1864, folio 18” x 22”, signed with ‘x’ mark by 57 members of the 9th Regiment Colored Infantry, Co F. This regiment was organized at Camp Stanton, Maryland, November 1863 and participated in seven major engagements, including the siege at Petersburg and Battle of Chaffin’s Farm. It also participated in the Union Army’s March into Richmond, April 1865. The origins of the first recorded black soldier battle hymn, “They Look Like Men of War” is credited to this regiment. The document notes the receipt by troop members of various clothing articles [flannel sack coats, forage caps, etc.] given to them by Captain William Royal. The document is also signed by Lt. H[arry] N. Thorburn. Some fold weakness with tape repairs on verso, and center fold splitting. A few minor holes. Otherwise VG.
