BEECHER, Henry Ward (1813 - 1887) Noted abolitionist and temperance activist. 1p. 8vo. Brief A. L. S. No place, but likely New York, Jan. 9, 1867, in which Beecher agrees to marry a couple under what at the time were regarded as unusual circumstances, in full: "My dear Sir, I should not object to unite a man to his deceased wife's sister. Yery truly yours, H.W. Beecher. " While such marriages were and are unusual, it should be remembered that the husband and potential wife come from completely different ancestry and no incest is being committed. However, there are strong biblical statements both condemning and supporting this kind of marriage. Either way, it was a VERY controversial subject in Brother Beecher's day. Very good to fine.
