Pamphlet of the “Remarks of Hon. Weldon B. Heyburn of Idaho” on the “Retention in the Employment of the Senate of James Jones, Late Body Servant of Jefferson Davis.”, 1911, 11p. quarto, containing dialogue in the Senate between Mr. Williams of Mississippi and Heyburn, nad reads in part: “...Mr. WILLIAMS. Mr. President, I rise for the purpose of pleading the cause of an old, faithful, and honest negro man....this old darky was loyal as a slave to Jefferson Davis, of Mississippi. That loyalty might have been accounted for by the fact that maybe it was the part of the policy of the slave’s position. But when freedom came he was loyal still, loyal to the man who had been his master, who had never said a cross word to him or laid upon him a blow. He followed him voluntarily as his bodyguard. He went with him to Fortress Monroe. He went into the cell there with him, and when old, emaciated, broken down by four years of nervous tension and public service, the old master was seized and shackled, this old darky was there with sympathy, help, and tears. He stayed with him all the time...” Much more. VG.
