A great antebellum Georgia state senator's, 2pp. 4to., letter written in ink by Andrew Jackson Miller, Augusta, [Ga.], Oct. 15, 1851 to his uncle assuring him that Howell Cobb will be elected Georgia's governor on a Union platform, reading, in part: "…I expect to leave home in a short time for Milledgeville having been reelected to the senate without opposition. Our Legislature will meet on the 1st Monday in November and will stand 39 Union Senators to 8 Secessionists and about 105 Union Reps to 30 Disunions. [Howell] Cobb's majority for Governor is about 18,000 over McDonald…Georgia goes strong for the presentation of the Union…while she insists on the adherence, by the North, to the adjustments made by the last Congress. I…sincerely hope that your state [South Carolina] will be content to remain in the Union, and…continue to prosper as she has done and would be doing now, if less attention was given to political agitators. The great body of the people must always suffer in such cases, and there is no practical benefit to any one…". Also included is the original transmittal envelope sans stamp. ANDREW JACKSON MILLER (1806-1856) became a member of Georgia's house of representative in 1836 and remained active in Georgian politics for the remainder of his life. Miller County, Georgia is named after him. VG
