MALLORY, Stephen R. (1813-1873). One of America's great naval geniuses, Confederate Navy Secretary throughout the entire Civil War, he originated the idea of ironclad warships. Letter Signed, “S.R. Mallory”, 1p. quarto, U.S. Senate, February 28, 1857, addressed Hon. J.C. Dobbin, Secretary of the Navy, it reads: “I beg leave to recommend for appointment to the Marine Corps Philip H.W. Fontane Esq. of Key West Florida. He is a native Floridian and is every way qualified for the appointment. I shall be pleased to learn of the success of this application...” Fine.
