Impending national doom is spelled out in this brief, but chilling four-line note telegrammed to the editors of the New York Tribune. A partly-printed 1p. 12mo., quickly scrawled telegram by a certain Mr. G. N. Saunders, Montgomery, [Ala.], April 8, 1861, reads, in full: "Crisis prolonged-secessionists cabinet-commissioners present-ultimatum was resulting-davis aggressive---G. N. S.". Below this, in contemporary hand is: "[The rebel G. N. Saunders from Montgomery, Ala.]". In a little over four days these prophetic words would bear much greater meaning as Confederate forces under P. T. G. Beauregard opened a bombardment upon Fort Sumter. Near fine.
