An early war-date Confederate officer's, 1p. 4to., letter written in ink by Capt. John E. Deans, Co. H, 3rd Virginia Infantry, Gosport Navy Yard, [Va.], June 19, 1861 to his commander, Lt. Col. Fletcher Archer, concerning one of his company becoming regimental color bearer, reading, in full: "Will you go me the kindness to inform me whether I am entitled to a fifth Sergeant or not. Gilhams Tactics recognizes one but some companies have been broken of theirs who were appointed since the last alteration of the laws of Virginia some two or three years ago. Please let me know your views about it. My fifth Sergeant was taken from me for color bearer of the regiment". Possibly, Deans was referring to Sgt. Charles A. Rond who was detailed on "special duty" on June 15, 1861. The 3rd Virginia served throughout the war in the Army of Northern Virginia and was part of Kemper's Brigade, Pickett's Division during Pickett's Charge at the battle of Gettysburg. Minor soiling, else very good.
