Autograph Letter Signed, "Jas. M. Young" 11th North Carolina Infantry, 3p. quarto, pencil, Yorktown, July 5, 1861, with cover, addressed to John Porter in Buncombe County, NC, with manuscript "5" and Yorktown postmark, it reads in part: "…3 or 4 of our company have had the measles …we have not seen any Yankees since the battle at Bethel I don't think we will fight anymore for ten or fifteen days. We are working hard at this place throwing up entrenchments. There are about 1000 troops here and on the road between here and Bethel. I was sent out on picket guard last night to catch some Yankees spies that are thought to be slipping about our camp at night. We went 3 miles down the river and took our stand in a big swamp among the owls and mosquitoes I believe I had rather been surrounded by Yankees…I think you men that are married ought not to come, we don't need many more men in this direction we can whip 4 to 1…I fear East Tennessee is going to give us some trouble as Western Virginia is doing it is hard to have to fight our own people but if they stand out for old Abe we will have to…" Fine. James Madison Young enlsited on April 24, 1861 as a Sergeant in the 1st North Carolina Volunteers. He was commissioned Captain on March 31, 1862 in Company K, 11th North Carolina, and would serve with this regiment until the surrender at Appomattox Court House. He is repeatedly mentioned in Chapman’s ‘More Terrible Than Victory - North Carolina’s Bloody Bethel Regiment, 1861-65.’
