A rare war-date Confederate exemption document 1p. 8vo., issued in ink by a certain John T. Franklin, Bedford County, [Va.], Mar. 19, 1862 asserting that John S. Pelin [?] is exempt from military service, reading, in part: "To the board of exemptions of Bedford County. Your petitioner asked to be exempted from the performance of military duty under the recent Proclamation of the Governor because he is permanently unable to discharge the duties of a soldier being afflicted with scrotal hernia. He volunteered in Capt. Wilson's Company & was discharged therefrom…he is in the hands of Capt. Saunders 10th Reg. Va. Mi…". On the verso in pencil two medical doctors noted their findings, reading, in full: "Case of scrotal Hernia, large size. Permanent". A rather matter a fact document. Some toning, else very good.
