Check Signed by William M. Paxton, dated April 26, 1864, Lexington, Virginia, payable to William B. Fox, for $500. Records state that William Paxton paid Fox $1500 with horse and outfit to be his substitute in the 14th Virginia Cavalry. Fox substituted for Paxton in December of 1862. In November of 1863 he was wounded at Bratton's Run while capturing the colors of a Federal regiment. He was later wounded in action again and lost his right leg below the knee. VG.
