A pair of 1p. legal folio war dated manuscript ADS's, [ n.p.,n.d. but identified as circa August 1862 within the text] both written by confederate General and Indian Agent Albert Pike, both of which are records of payments made to the Choctaw nation during the war. In the first document Pike lists:"…An account of moneys received and paid out by Albert Pike on account of fees due by the Choctaw Nation to John J. Cochrane, Albert Pike, Luke Lea and Douglas H. Cooper ". The Document lists fees beginning in March of 1861, just a month before the War, when the Confederate States has seceded and formed their own government, and continues up to July of 1862. The itemized expenditures total $51, 675.60, and were paid with $45,000 in Confederate Paper and 6,675.60 in Gold . The second document is also a 1p. legal folio ADS by Pike, and bears the title: Albert Pike, Attorney for Choctaws, on a/c with his co attorney John T. Cochrane. ( no known relation to the attorney that represented Mr. O. J. Simpson.). In addition to war dated expenses, Pike also charges the Choctaws $2500 for the period of 1857 to 1861, when he lobbied for the Choctaws before Congress. Adding up all his unpaid expenses accumulated before the war as their attorney, Pike bills the Choctaws for $14,281 in Coin, which was die to him on January 2 of 1862. In addition, Pike also lists charges of $23,000 in Confederate money accumulated from January to June of 1862, of which Pike pays Cochrane 25 percent, or 5,750.00. It is interesting to note that Pike appears to be still representing the Choctaws as their attorney while also serving as a Confederate General ! Documents concerning the Indians and the Confederacy areextremely rare. Except for some weakness at the folds, both documents are in near fine condition, and come with complete transcriptions.
