Group of three letters of Stanford Stoneman (1839-1889) 45th Virginia Infantry, who enlisted on May 29, 1861 and served until he was discharged for disability in July, 1862. Includes: ALS, “Stanford Stoneman” 2p. quarto, Monroe County, Virginia, August 7, 1861, and reads in part: “...I am not well yet of the measles...the Doctor stopped in on me so I think I am mending tolerable fast...there is 4 of our compnay here with me ...I saw a man from Taswell County die last evening...I saw a letter from Alexander Branscom last evening and he says they had a terrible fight there a few days ago and I shall not be surprised if there is fight not far below here...” VG...plus; ALS, “Stanford Stoneman” 4p. octavo, August 22, 1861, Monroe County, Va, and reads in part: “...I am still on the mend and hope I shall soon be able to go on to the Regiment...I shall stay here until I feel like I could walk 40 miles a day...since I have been here the sick have all got well but 13 too has died here and I think there is one more will die...they say our men was going to have a fight today and I think they was in 8 miles of the Enemy...our Cavalry cam came in contact with the Yankees and killed 12 wounded some and got some horses...” Near Fine...plus; ALS, “S. Stoneman” 1p. quarto, September 24, 1861, Greenbrier, Virginia, and reds in part: “...I am sick again, but I think I am mending...I have a lame leg and I dont know what is the matter with it.
