Autograph Letter Signed, "Henry Wright" 5th Virginia Infantry, 4p. octavo, Winchester, Virginia, September 25, 1862, he writes in part: "…some three or four of our company was acting on Provo. guard then we have since been discharged and ordered to our Regiments. I have been ordered to report to the hospital, I went around the hospital and found them in such a condition I could not think of going…I have become so weak I can not much move than walk. I am reduced almost to all skeleton, we scarcely get anything to eat…Would there be any chance to get you or Zimmerman to get our carriage and come for me it is asking a great deal of you I would not do it if I had any person at home that could come…I am exceedingly anxious to get somewhere so I can get some attention. We had to leave our knapsacks some 5 weeks ago and my coat was in the wagon and has been lost. I have nothing but my shirt and a very warm pair of pants, I can not be comfortable at night with only one blanket…Provisions and grain is very scarce, there is nothing to be had in town, shoes are selling at 9 dollars. Our camp is out at this end of town on the right hand of the road and on market street where there is a large number of large new tents….Our tent is no. 42 if in any case we should move from the place we are at I will leave a not at Mr. Falkners shoe shop nearly opposite the court house on main street. Every person that sees me think I ought by all means to try and get home…." Fine
