A unique war-date Confederate soldier's, 2pp. oblong 8vo., letter written in ink, on a piece of ledger book page, by Pvt. Freeman Williams and his friend Jasper Payne, Co. F, 31st Miss. Infantry, Vicksburg, Miss., May 9, 1863 to the elder Williams concerning life in a Confederate regiment during the siege of Vicksburg, reading, in part: "…we are in camp about 6 or 8 miles from Vicksburg. We are without tents or cooking utensils. We took our bread on board Johny cake fassion and broil our meat on the coals…Billy Rosse has offered to carry letters for our com[pany] for 25 cts apeace. A good many of them will be directed to your care. The boys would be very glad that you would contrive them to their families…[then Jasper Payne writes]…I have not forgotten you…I want to see you all the worst you ever saw…give my respects to Miss. Willimas' tell her to write to me…". Some spelling and grammar has been corrected for ease of reading. Minor toning, else very good.
