A great war-date Confederate soldier's, 2pp. oblong 8vo., letter written in pencil, on a piece of blue ledger book page, by Pvt. Freeman Williams, Co. F, 31st Miss. Infantry, Canton, Miss., June 15, 1863 to his mother concerning the Confederate positions around Vicksburg during her siege in June 1863, reading, in part: "… we are moving near Vicksburg every day…we have possession of Snider Bluff and Big Black Bridge and our troops still holes Port Hudson…Gen. Kirby Smith is reported to have possession of Milligan's Bend. [?] is…reported to be cutting a road through the bottom to Old Town some 17 or 18 miles below Helena…if we get possession of all of these points we will have the Feds in a purty place. It is reported that the Feds are leaving Vicksburg, but I think it is all a hoaks…the troops [are] in good courage…I think…our day is brighter than it has been in some time…an extra [newspaper]…stated that the peace question was being again told very much in the North…if they fail here they will call off the hounds and quiet the race. I received the clothes you sent by Corp. Whorten…I do not intend to keep but one suit as long as we stay here for I don't know when I will…to throw [them] away again…". Some spelling and grammar has been corrected for ease of reading. Minor toning, else very good.
