Printed General Order broadside, 5-1/4”x7”, Head Quarters, Department of West Virginia & East Tennessee, Abingdon, Virginia, October 29, 1863, issued by order of Major General Samuel Jones, being General Orders No. 6, and reads in part: “...The following Act of Congress is published for the information of all concerned: ‘Every person not subject to the rules and articles of war who shall procure or entice a soldier of the Confederate States to desert, or who shall purchase from any soldier his arms, uniform, clothing, or any part thereof, shall, upon legal conviction, be fined at the discretion of the Court, having cognizance of the same, in any sum not exceeding three hundred dollars, and be imprisoned not exceeding one year’...Commanders of Posts, Provost Marshals and Guards on Railroad cars, will seize all arms and army clothing found in the possession of citizens...” VG.
