A great war-date Confederate soldier's, 2pp. 4to., letter written in pencil by Pvt. Freeman Williams, Co. F, 31st Miss. Infantry, Vicksburg, Miss., May 8, 1863 to his mother concerning the concentration of Union troops outside Vicksburg two months before the "citadel" of the Confederacy fell, reading, in part: "…a fight is expected here. The enemy is landing…on this side of thee river…there will be no fight unless the Feds make the attack…our troops has gained another victory in Virginia driving the enemy back across the Rapahanak…you nead not bother yourself about shoes for me. My shoes were very good yet…the Feds have been in our country. There has been…talk…trying to mount our Regt but it all died away…write anything that the Feds done and said when they come to our house…we have a very nice camp ground with wood and water handy but if the future be gadged by the past we will not stay here long…our Regt has constituted the flying artillery of the western division. We are under one of the strictest Brigadier Generals in the South…". Some spelling and grammar has been corrected for ease of reading. Some soiling, else very good.
