A truly historic war-date Confederate document, 1p. large folio, written in ink by Capt. George W. Nelson, AAIG to Lee's chief of artillery, Brig. Gen. William N. Pendleton, [n. p.], March 25, 1863 certifying to the fact that negro teamsters stole pistol caps from the army's ordnance train, reading, in part: "I certify that I have…examined onto the facts concerning the loss of twenty-five thousand…pistol caps under charge of Capt. James W. Garnett…& I find the following: Capt. (then lieut.) Garnett receipted to Lieut. Anderson for a lot of caps on the 24th January 1863; on the 28th…it was found that one large box containing (25000)…caps was missing. The quarters of the teamsters…were searched immediately & eight…or nine…small boxes [were] recovered. These were found in the possession of negro teamsters no clue to the remaining could be found…I certify that no blame can be attached to the officer in charge as no guards [were] allowed to the train & every effort was used to recover the said caps…". Nothing is said of what happened to the teamsters, but it is undoubtedly certain that they were severely punished. Near fine.
