Book, "Reports of the Committee on the Conduct of War - Fort Pillow Massacre - Returned Prisoners." 170pp. 8vo., House of Representatives 38th Congress, Session 1. May, 1864. Pertaining to the massacre by troops under command of Nathan Bedford Forrest at Fort Pillow and the state of POW's being returned by the Confederacy. The 128pp dedicated to the Ft. Pillow massacre includes testimony from officers, surgeons, colored soldiers and others present or nearby during the attack. Surgeon Horace Wardner states in part: "..They were the worst butchered men I have ever seen. I have been in several hard battles, but I have never seen men so mangled as they were; and nearly all of them concur in stating that they received all their wounds after they had thrown down their arms, surrendered, and asked for quarters..." Nathan Hunter (colored) 6th US Hvy Arty testifies in part: "...I know General Forrest rode his horse over me three or four times. I did not know him until I heard his men call his name. He said to some negro men there that he knew them; that they had been in his nigger yard in Memphis. He said he was not worth five dollars when he started, and had got rich trading in negroes..." Jacob Thompson (colored) "...they just called them out like dogs, and shot them down. I reckon they shot about fifty, white and black, right there. They nailed some black sergeants to the logs, and set the logs on fire..." and much more on the notorious assault and capture of Ft. Pillow by Forrest. Also section pert. to returned POW's with engravings of 6 emancipated soldiers, with name, parole date, and if they survived or not. VG.
