A great war-date Confederate civilian's, 1p. 4to., letter written in pencil by Slave Owner William P. Hauf, Chesterfield, [Va.], June 5, 1864 to a certain Col. Hopkins concerning the whereabouts of his missing slaves who defected to the cavalry troopers of Phil Sheridan during his raid upon Southern lines in May 1864, reading, in part: "… I understand there was a number of negroes captured below Petersburg from the raiders that passed through this vicinity. You will oblige me by finding out something about what negroes are in jail in your city and whether any one of mine are there as I had three…go off with the raiders…". Hopkin's replied in ink, Petersburg, [Va.], June 8, 1864, reading, in part: "…on inquiry at our jail I learn none of your negroes are there. Some 4 or 5 escaped a week ago and one was shot by the guard and killed…none of yours are amongst them. Only 3…remain in jail. I am very sorry to hear of your loss…". VG.
