HILL, Benjamin Jefferson (1825-1880) Confederate General from Tennessee who led a brigade at Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga. He would later serve in Hood’s Tennesse campaign and ride with General Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1865. Autograph Endorsement Signed, "Hd. Qrs. Pro. Mar. Gen. Dept. Dalton, Febry 28/64 Respectfully forwarded B.J. Hill Col & Pro. Mar Genl." on verso of 1p. folio, Autograph Letter Signed, "A.R. Grigg", as 1st Lieutenant, written from Dalton, Georgia, on the 28th of February, it reads "In pursance of orders from these Hd Qrs I appear and report in person being detailed as adjutant of the 25th Tenn Regt to Capt Shaws Scouting Corp in Middle Tenn, he being Captured in Ochs I was ordered by Pro. Marshall Kent to take charge of the Corps and certify that the following arrears are due…." Followed by list of horses with values and their owners in the command including one listed as "Horse wounded and captured…in performance of duty…" and one "Horse valued $600 wounded & captured at or near Pulaski…" Two of these men appear on the 10th Tennessee Cavalry roster who fought with Forrest. Docketed on verso by Col. A.C. McKinstry "Atlanta March 1, 1864 Lt. Grigg was employed by me while I was Provost Marshall Genl. Asst. in the Scout service at $100 per month as were all those engaged with him…." and refuses the claim. The refusal is then reversed by General Johnston, whose Inspector General, Colonel E.J. Harris, writes: "…The Pro. Mar. Genl. is authorized to pay Lt. Grigg & his party at the rate of $100 per month from the time they were first employed, till the 31st of January 1864. The claim for horses cannot be paid out of the secret service fund. Payment will be made to each individual man as these men are settled with, they will be forwarded to their proper commands…" Fine.
